Obamadolatry
By Ned | July 4, 2008
Despite recent FISA-related wankery, I’m still an Obama supporter. And although I can’t stand Rolling Stone’s music coverage, they’ve got a great political section - largely in part to Matt Taibbi. But despite all of this, it’s hard not to be embarrassed by the magazine’s misty-eyed hero worship of Obama.
This is the cover of a recent issue, portraying Obama is a cross between Jesus and Captain Marvel (I would have said Superman, but the lightning strike in the background is a Captain Marvel touch). And this is the cover of the latest issue, with Obama as an easy-going regular guy with a smile that can melt both your heart and your pants.
That’s pretty much the angle that the actual cover story takes. The way Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner manages to take even things that seemed like obvious faults and turn them into virtues is pretty impressive. Like this:
So far in this campaign, despite their evident admiration, Obama has held the press at a respectful distance. The limit for our interview is going to be 50 minutes, which I think says a lot about him and his campaign. Most every other presidential candidate I’ve met and interviewed has tended to be gregarious, talkative almost to a fault, eager to please and eager to impress. Obama, by contrast, is quiet, collected and effortlessly precise.
Wow! Obama isn’t limiting the press’s access - as others have complained - he’s holding them at a respectful distance. What a swell guy.
