Reviews of Movies You’ve Already Seen

By Ned | May 15, 2008

JUNO (OR: The Four Stages of Grief as Applied to a Movie I Really Wanted to Like But Didn’t)

1. DENIAL: “This is pretty good! Ellen Page is excellent, and the dialogue is delightfully quirky!”

2. ANGER: “Wait a minute, did a character just seriously say, ‘Oh my blog?’ What the hell?”

3. DEPRESSION: “Jesus Christ, the whole movie is like this.”

4. ACCEPTANCE: “(20 minutes in): Okay, I’m turning this off.”

THERE WILL BE BLOOD (OR: Spoiler alert.)

Regardless of how you feel about the rest of the movie (which I enjoyed, but will admit would occasionally meander off onto weird tangents), the final scene (see above) is incredible. I get a huge kick out of watching great actors play truly monstrous characters, and every good thing anyone has said about Daniel Day Lewis’s performance here is true.

That’s all, kids! Tune in some time in January when I review all of the hot summer blockbusters I finally got around to seeing!

I felt pretty much the same way about Juno. “Oh my blog” was my breaking point, too.

Mainly I liked several of the actors. The main character and Michael Cera’s dude were pretty great — pretty much any scene with them together was gold. But the dialogue tried fifty times too hard, and oh my God was there too much Mouldy Peaches stuff in there.

God, thank you for putting my exact feelings about fucking Juno into worlds.

I just realized I forgot the “bargaining” step. That was the point where I decided that if I could make it to a half hour into the movie, then I should keep going. I made it to 20 minutes.
