No takesies-backsies

By Ned | March 23, 2008

It looks like the editorial board of the Day has a little buyer’s remorse.

When The Day endorsed Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman for re-election in November 2006 it was supporting a candidate who demonstrated a history of pragmatic leadership and a willingness to seek bipartisan solutions.

We wonder what happened to that senator.

Sen. Lieberman’s open-ended commitment to military involvement in Iraq comes as no surprise. The senator made it clear when running for re-election that was his position. Sen. Lieberman wants the United States military to remain in Iraq until the war is won, whatever that means. It conflicts with this newspaper’s position that the time has come for a gradual withdrawal of U.S. forces.

I get the sense that a lot of people in Connecticut are asking themselves why the hell they voted for that guy. And a lot them are going to rationalize it like the Day did by saying that the McCain-endorsing proud warmongerer of today isn’t the man they voted for.

Here’s the thing, though: He actually is. There wouldn’t have even been a real Senate race in CT in 2006 if it weren’t that a bunch of Democratic primary voters had noticed Lieberman’s stalwart support for the Republican party line on Iraq. The whole point of the race was that Lieberman was the schmuck that he continues to be to this very day. But guys like the editorial staff of the Day were too blind, lazy, or plain ignorant to figure it out until it was too late. And what’s their excuse? That they voted for Joe Lieberman, not the evil twin who is clearly inhabiting his Senate office as we speak.

No dice, guys. You supported him, so you share responsibility for the six shitty years that follow. Time to start acting like grown-ups about that.
