A good ol’ fashioned thumping

By Ned | February 10, 2008

I really should have blogged earlier than this about the voting last night - particularly for any new readers who might have stumbled on this site as a result of the recent inter-blog hugfest between me, Matt and Minipundit (if that is indeed his real name). Alas, I spent my whole weekend pretending to be a cokehead for my friend’s film school project.

Everyone pretty much already knows what happened by now: Folks back home used to call it “a good ol’ fashioned thumping.” Because most people in mid-sized New England liberal arts college towns talk like 50’s front porch Southern stereotypes.

On the Democratic side, as Steve Benen said, Obama exceeded expectations. Shocking, I know, given how spot-on expectations have been for this entire campaign season.

Meanwhile, on the Republican side, John McCain was the prom queen that everyone at the prom secretly loathes. Which is to say, he’s going to win the nomination even though the Republican base thinks he’s a big old jerk. And no, I don’t understand it either. After all, he’s big and tough and strong and manly on foreign policy. What’s the Republican base thinking here?

“Hmm. I like that McCain wants to keep us in Iraq forever, declare war on any country he feels uncomfortable sitting next to on an airplane and permanently transform the country into some sort of pseudo-Klingon military state. But I’m concerned that his negligible views on the economy are insufficiently ludicrous. And how do we know that he really believes that Adam, Eve, and their sassy dinosaur sidekick Larry were really all kicking it in the garden of Eden like 6,000 years ago?”

That’s my theory, anyway.

No we don’t. We sound like Greenwich Village, vegetable garden, liberal elite stereotyoes.

Yes, indeed it is my real name. It’s right there on the birth certificate: “Minipundit Robert Matthews”. My parents are strange people.
