I miss Alberto Gonzalez

By Ned | February 7, 2008

Our new Attorney General has basically announced his intention to not exercise any oversight over the White House. So what exactly is his job then?

1. Using his legal expertise to explain why anything the Bush administration is legal.

2. Being somebody besides Alberto Gonzalez.

3. Creative rewriting of pre-existing laws. (See also: point #1.)

4. Getting yelled at by John Conyers.

5. Letting the president call him “Alberto.”

Oh, and that last link I posted? Scroll to the bottom and you’ll get this:

Delahunt, still baffled, wanted to know if there was a “legal precedent” for this view of the Office of Legal Counsel’s power.

Mukasey replied that it was a “practical consideration.”

When Delahunt asked again, Mukasey admitted, “I can’t sit here and cite a case.”

That’s the Attorney General. In case anyone forgot.

UPDATE: Add “protecting the White House from contempt citations” to Mukasey’s job description.
