Even though I tend to strongly dislike Democratic leadership, I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for Pelosi. The latest press release from the Speaker’s office is a good example of why.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected a request by Republican Congressman Christopher Shays (CT-04) to switch to the Democratic caucus and maintain his seniority. Shays, a pro-war Republican from a largely anti-war district, is known for his allegedly moderate positions. Speaker Pelosi did not feel she could retain credibility as a leader of the Democratic Party if she allowed Shays into her caucus.
The last thing the party needs right now is another Democratic who basically votes like a Republican, as tempting as it may be to embarrass the GOP by claiming one of their own. But Pelosi takes an even better shot at them by publicizing Shays’ duplicity. I’m going to go ahead and predict that in 2008, the CT congressional delegation will become completely Democratic - If this doesn’t get Shays off of Rove’s list of key races in 2008, nothing will.
UPDATE: Well crap. Thanks to Keith for catching this one. Turns out it was an April Fool’s joke. Oh well.
